Welcome to the 2022 Cultivate Gathering PORTAL!
Sept 30-Oct 1 • Normal Heights • San Diego
Friends, old and new, we welcome you to the Cultivate Gathering 2022!
This is not your typical “conference.” In fact, we’ve veered away from using the word “conference” altogether because this gathering is more about connecting than information, creating together rather than learning from experts, and convening around purpose rather than communicating a strategy. We gather to celebrate real stories of real people in real neighborhoods—to sing new songs from our places and awaken our shared imaginations for how to join what God is doing. We hope and pray that this gathering nourishes your body, soul, and mind, and that you leave feeling connected, nourished, and inspired to be the church in your neighborhood.
On this Portal you’ll find a detailed schedule for our time together, answers to some basic questions, a link to help fund our live album project, and the beautiful headshots and bios of the many people who made this gathering possible. Do take the time to read through the Portal and don’t hesitate to reach out!
Peace,
Christiana & the Cultivate creative team

LOCATION: ROOFTOP A
DESCRIPTION: Feeling exhausted? Find yourself saying yes to more things than you can manage? Want to discuss how difficult it can be to maintain healthy boundaries especially in ministry?? During this session, we'll explore ways to manage and prevent burnout as well as feel more empowered to draw boundaries to protect the things most valuable to us.
-
LOCATION: Social Hall
DESCRIPTION: The Enneagram not only helps us better understand ourselves and our core motivations, it also helps us understand how we can contribute to the flourishing of our neighborhoods. In this workshop you will discover how you are naturally wired to reflect the wholistic face of Christ right where you have been placed.
-
LOCATION: Lounge
DESCRIPTION: As mentees of Father Greg Boyle, these homeboys and colleagues will share how their stories have birthed a creative work in their neighborhood of Pomona, serving neighbors and impacting their place for God's good. "God's Pantry" as they call it, is rooted in the heart of one of LA's neediest communities, serving the underserved and sharing the love of God in everyday, practical ways. Sergio, Goose and Robert will share about their work in community building at the intersection of food insecurity and social injustice. This work always involves organizing individuals to transform their own neighborhood.
Join us for an interactive workshop wth plenty of opportunity for exploring questions and sharing stories. We believe this model of ministry can inspire and reinvigorate churches in neighborhoods all over!
-
LOCATION: Preschool Room A
DESCRIPTION: Knowing how to read the physical landscape as a text can uncover clues to the history, the current concerns and values, and even the future of an urban neighborhood. Learning the story of a place can better inform the curation of culturally relevant and hope-filled engagement with that community.
-
LOCATION: Rooftop B
DESCRIPTION: What is the role of the Church in public life? How is our work different or complementary to non profits, or social justice advocacy? In this workshop we will explore what is that qué-sé-yo that makes our contributions unique in today’s world and why it is important that we understand and reclaim our role of service and solidarity in our neighborhoods.
-
LOCATION: Preschool Room B
DESCRIPTION: As the founder of Freedom Restoration Project in her neighborhood of Mae Sot, Thailand, Sia has been working to help break the destructive cycles of domestic violence and other social complexities through education programs and community empowerment. She is educated in and impassioned for trauma care in the context of community.
From a community around the world to next door in your own neighborhood, do you know how to recognize the signs of domestic violence? Join Sia to hear stories about vulnerable women and girls in Mae Sot, Thailand and to build your own awareness about domestic violence. Knowing the signs is the first step to help others or seek help for yourself. We’ll hear similarities across cultures and discuss how expressions of abuse might vary in cultural contexts.
-
LOCATION: Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION: An interview with Shannan, led by Mathew Mitchell
//
Start With Hello, By Shannan Martin: You want more. You want to belong to a community that looks out for each other. You believe in your bones we don’t have to live detached, distracted, and divided. The question is, how?
Shannan Martin invites you into deeper connection through simple resets, such as:
· Open Door > Perfect Décor We invite others in, seeking to connect, not impress.
· Familiar > Fussy We serve tacos and pizza like the feasts they are, because fancy is overrated.
· Tender > Tough We greet the world with our hearts exposed and our guards down.
Packed with street-level practices and real-talk storytelling, Start with Hello is your field guide for a life of security, camaraderie, and joy. There is no step too small.

Food Options in the Neighborhood (all in walking distance!)
Thai Joint - Some of the best Thai food in San Diego can be found here..the drunken noodles with mock duck is amazing as is their green curry. Yall be chill on the spice number though…anything above 3 is just asking for pain.
Blind Lady Ale House- One of the top 100 best Beer bars in America for the last decade and, not only that, their pizzas are perfection. Vegan friendly options as well! Our absolute fave❤️
Rabbit Hole- Looking for fun and a wide variety of menu items? Check out the Rabbit Hole. Good salads and if you eat meat order the Cubano sandwich with blue cheese.
Jyoti-Bihanga - Simple vegetarian and vegan fare prepared simply and with care. Plus they have air conditioning!
Dao Fu- Family owned and in the neighborhood for decades, Dao Fu’s dishes are amazing to taste and gorgeously presented. Their house made tofu is the best and if you think you don’t like tofu you will after you try it. Promise. Seriously. In fact, if you try it and you don’t like it come find Pastor Brent and he will give you a dollar.
Nozaru Ramen Bar - Great variety of ramens and rice bowls. Try the Angry Ape!
-
Come spend time in solitude with God - engage our contemplative art stations, receive prayer from our prayer guides and soak in the reflective live worship in the sanctuary space.

Arrive early so you have time to park…and carpool if you can! The church doesn’t have a parking lot but there is street parking on Adams Ave and Hawley Blvd. Uber/Lyft or rentable scooters (Lyft/Bird) if you're staying nearby is a great option too!
